ABOUT CICLAVIA
Inspired by Bogotá’s weekly ciclovía, CicLAvia temporarily closes streets to car traffic and opens them to Angelenos to use as a public park. Free for all, CicLAvia connects communities to each other across an expansive city, creating a safe place to bike, walk, skate, roll, and dance through Los Angeles County.

CicLAvia started as a grassroots initiative in 2008 as the outgrowth of discussions held by a number of individuals who recognized that open streets events could address active transportation, urban land use, and public health needs in Los Angeles. Inspired by the ciclovía events that started 49 years ago in Bogotá, Colombia, the first CicLAvia was held on October 10, 2010. Thirteen years and 47 CicLAvias later, more than 1.8 million people have explored nearly 280 miles of open streets in Los Angeles County.

CicLAvia is a 501(c)3 non-profit that catalyzes vibrant public spaces, active transportation, and good health through car-free streets. CicLAvia engages with people to transform our relationship with our communities and with each other.

BRIEF: EVENT GOER EXPERIENCE TEAM

Inclusivity and accessibility are at the core of CicLAvia. All initiatives are designed with the intent that anybody can participate, including audiences of diverse backgrounds, cultures, nationalities, income levels, immigration statuses, circumstances and identities. For this project, we want to focus on two, specific audiences:

  • Broader Audiences (elderly, differently abled etc.): If the goal is to make CicLAvia an event for everyone, how do we invite everyone? Older audiences can participate in many ways—biking, walking, volunteering, etc. How do we make this segment feel welcome, empowered, and interested?

  • Folks who don’t necessarily ride a bike: Walking groups, run clubs, anyone that likes to explore the city but isn’t a regular cyclist.

  • Children: CicLAvia event organizers have heard from some people that kids do not feel safe going out and playing in their neighborhoods. How can we encourage children—perhaps through their schools—to come out and enjoy the day safely.

PROBLEM
The street-closure is seen as a cyclists-only event when inclusivity is really at the core of CicLAvia’s mission.

INSIGHTS
CicLAvia staff members were concerned about creating waste from one-off signs and the existing signs still left many event-goers unable to find water, restrooms, and other facilities like bike rentals.

SOLUTION
Our solution was a modular and interactive sign that relied on magnetism to make the directional signs evergreen and an interaction that drove home the idea that CicLAvia is for everyone.

HOW MIGHT WE MINIMIZE WASTE AND IMPROVE WAYFINDING AT CICLAVIA?

SKETCHES
We went to the whiteboard to figure out how to make it actually happen. There were a lot of little details to figure out but the three biggest ones were; how are we attaching the signs to the pole? How do we make the top sign spin? How do we make this thing as structurally sound as we can? This entire project was a big question mark that needed to be figured out.

NEXT STEPS
Going forward, Our next steps would be to simplify the design by removing the spinning crank interaction, which proved to be a little too ambitious, in favor of the magnetic signs.

Since we uncovered event goers impulse to take pictures in front of the signs, we also think adding a big sign on top that says CicLAvia would give the photos a sense of place.

Second, we found that the signs would work better if they were double sided so that they can be seen from all angles.

Finally, we would source a container to keep the magnetic letters organized for easy assembly and break down for the event.
