DESCRIPTIONAs a member of the 2023 Snap Design Academy cohort, I joined a multi-disciplinary team with members from the Engineering and Storytelling Academies to develop a Snapchat feature. My team was tasked with addressing the inaccessibility of higher education for low-socioeconomic populations, as well as the lack of resources first-generation students face leading up to, and throughout, college.

Our solution was a pair of features called Pods and AchieveAI. These created both structure and a sense of accountability for new and aspiring first-generation college students, making up for what they might be missing at home.

ABOUT THE SNAP ACADEMIES
The Snap Academies are nine-week, summer educational programs for community college students hosted by Snap Inc., the makers of Snapchat.

SDA projects involve building visually stunning graphics, developing expressive designs that tell a persuasive data-driven story, and having fun designing with Snap features like Geofilters.

I was a member of the Snap Design Academy's sixth cohort in Summer 2023.

PROBLEM
OVERVIEW

Low-income and first-generation students are much more likely to drop out of school. Without access to mentorship, tutoring/test prep, and the materials they need when applying to universities, they often find it difficult to navigate the college process and higher education environments.

INSIGHTS
First-generation college students may not be able to turn to their family at home for accountability or for advice regarding applications, for example. They are often missing that structure that would help them in their academic careers.

SOLUTION
We created two features. The first is Pods, which is meant to replicate in-person group dynamics and foster the increase in accountability/commitment people experience when working with others. The second is Achieve AI, drawing reference from Snapchat's My AI, is meant to give under-resourced students targeted, individual guidance in the form of an AI mentor.

RESEARCH: NON-PROFIT INTERVIEW
PROCESS

We spoke with Sharon Plunkett, Senior Director at St. Joseph Center for their adult women’s vocational program CODETALK.

Most of their students are older and have come from addiction, incarceration or deep poverty. She spoke of the trust that needs to be gained by the teachers for the students to embrace the program and transform themselves.

The first thing they are reminded of when they arrive to class is, “You are here and we are here for you. We are committing to you so you can commit to the program.”

The experiential essence we gained from this interview is the idea of accountability.

WIREFRAME SKETCHES
PROCESS

Once we nailed down our theme, we got to sketching how this would live inside Snapchat and the various ways to communicate that one is studying or would like a study buddy in their Pod.

USER FLOWS
PROCESS

In parallel to wireframing, we found that creating a flow would help guide us to the most efficient path of actions and screens.

FEATURES
PROCESS

We premiered three main subfeatures:

Study Streaks
Pomodoro Timer
Visual study status

NEXT STEPS
We believe Pods would work very well on the Snapchat’s desktop version. The timer and co-working functionality would be better used at a desk, hands free.
